Tribute to Mark HopkinsHonouring a Pioneer of Space Solar Power and Human Space Settlement SPACE Canada is proud to honour the life, leadership, and lasting legacy of Mark Hopkins. He was a visionary advocate, strategic thinker, and mentor whose work helped shape the modern movement toward space-based solar power and human settlement in space. His passing in 2023 marked the loss of a foundational figure in our community, but his influence continues to guide and inspire generations of students, researchers, and policy leaders worldwide. A Lifelong Champion of Space Settlement Mark Hopkins devoted much of his life to advancing the idea that humanity’s future lies in space. His early engagement began with the L5 Society, where in 1975 he joined the first Board of Directors of the organization devoted to making Gerard K. O’Neill’s vision of free-space settlements a reality. Mark’s strategic insight and leadership played a pivotal role in the growth of the L5 Society and in shaping its long-term direction. In 1987, Mark was part of the team that negotiated the historic merger of the L5 Society with the National Space Institute. This merger formed the National Space Society (NSS), now one of the world’s leading organizations advocating for space development and settlement. Over the decades, Mark served in numerous leadership roles at the NSS, ultimately becoming CEO Emeritus. A Thought Leader in the Economics of Space Mark’s academic training included a BS in Economics from the California Institute of Technology and an MA in Economics from Harvard University. This foundation equipped him to examine the feasibility and potential pathways of human expansion into space from an economic perspective. During his long career with the RAND Corporation, he contributed to influential studies that explored the societal and technical aspects of space development. His work supported the creation of NASA publication SP-413, Space Settlements: A Design Study, in 1977, a seminal document that helped frame early thinking about the societal and technical possibilities of living in free space. Mark’s ability to translate visionary ideas into practical, economically informed strategies made him one of the most respected thinkers in the field. Leadership in Public Policy and Advocacy Mark understood that progress in space required both technological innovation and thoughtful policy engagement. To strengthen the role of space advocates in the political process, he founded Spacecause and SpacePAC. Through these initiatives he helped ensure that the case for space development had a clear and informed presence in public discussions. He was instrumental in countering efforts to ratify the so-called “Moon Treaty,” which would have imposed significant restrictions on lunar and space development. His work helped preserve opportunities for future commercial, scientific, and settlement activities beyond Earth. Mark also engaged internationally, traveling to countries including India and China to discuss shared challenges and the global potential of space development. A Mentor, Advisor, and Friend To SPACE Canada, Mark Hopkins was a respected leader, a trusted mentor, and a source of thoughtful guidance. His generosity of spirit and commitment to supporting others helped shape our programs and strengthened our ability to encourage and inspire young innovators. He believed deeply in the power of students, researchers, and young professionals to accelerate humanity’s progress in space. His kindness, humility, and strategic wisdom shaped the experience of countless individuals across the global space community. Carrying His Legacy Forward In recognition of his profound impact, SPACE Canada established The Mark Hopkins Award, presented annually as part of the International Space Solar Power Competition. This award recognizes individuals or teams who demonstrate exceptional vision, perseverance, and creativity in advancing the field of space-based solar power. By celebrating Mark’s life and legacy through this tribute and through the award that bears his name, we recognize all that he accomplished and all that he inspired in others. His legacy lives on in everyone who pursues bold ideas, embraces challenges, and works toward a sustainable and thriving future in space. Only together, using the great gift of all of our scientific knowledge, can we find a path to a sustainable ecosystem on earth and in space for the betterment of all and the attainment of humanity’s greater purpose. (Toronto, CANADA, January 4, 2024) The International Space Solar Power Student Competition proudly introduces the Mark Hopkins Award. SPACE Canada is cognizant of the solemn circumstances in announcing this year's winner of the Mark Hopkins Award for advancing the development of space solar power technology.
Mark Hopkins was a long-time mentor and advisor of SPACE Canada, and his wise and experienced counsel enabled us to provide the event annually as well as grow the space solar power community, particularly among young and promising students. Mark passed away in 2023.
Mark Hopkins was a long-serving member of the National Space Society and one of the key leaders from the organization’s early days as the L5 Society. He had a BS in Economics from the California Institute of Technology and an MA in economics from Harvard University. When not volunteering for the NSS, he had a long career with the RAND Corporation and provided economic analyses of space settlement for multiple studies, including one that resulted in the publication of NASA SP-413, “Space Settlements: A Design Study,” in 1977.
In 1975 Hopkins joined the first Board of Directors of the L5 Society, a citizen group dedicated to making Gerard K. O’Neill’s vision of the human settlement of free space a reality. In 1987 he was part of the team that negotiated the merger of the L5 Society with the National Space Institute to form the National Space Society (NSS). He held many positions within the organization over the decades, including, most recently, CEO Emeritus. Hopkins was especially interested in using the political process to advance the cause of space settlement and founded Spacecause and Spacepac for this purpose. He was also active in the successful fight to prevent the United States from ratifying the so-called “Moon Treaty” which would have created obstacles to space development and settlement. Hopkins also traveled to India and China to discuss challenges facing global space powers.
SPACE Canada is proud to honor Mark and will strive to carry on his legacy. The Mark Hopkins Award aims to celebrate his legacy by acknowledging individuals or teams demonstrating extraordinary ingenuity, perseverance, and transformative ideas in the field of space-based solar power.
